National Ford Council Report
The National Ford Council met on 8/16/11 to discuss issues concerning the membership. The meeting began with
discussion concerning the status of the Equality of Sacrifice Grievance. The arbitrator will hear the grievance no later than
9/22/11. The meeting date is dependent on Ford Motor Company's Joe Hinrich ability to get to Dearborn from China,
which is his current work assignment. The company is now cooperating and providing the information that was requested
by the UAW concerning this grievance. Once the grievance is heard there will be a two-week window for both the
company and the UAW to write briefs. At that point, the arbitrator will have up to thirty days to write his decision. UAW
Vice President Jimmy Settles told the council that the grievance is definitely separate from the contract.
Jimmy Settles also discussed the upcoming strike vote, and we will be relaying times and dates in the very near future of
when this vote will be conducted. He encouraged everyone to send the Ford Motor Company a message and let them
know that we are very serious about this contract. The strike vote results are due to Solidarity House by 9/2/11.
Marty Mulloy, Ford Motor Company's Vice President of Labor Affairs was invited to the meeting by Jimmy Settles.
Marty was in attendance strictly to answer questions from the council. The message was sent to Mr. Mulloy that the
membership expects contractual gains in the 2011 National Contract. Mr. Mulloy had several compliments for the UAW
workers, but he was also very quick to give all the recent success of Ford Motor Company to Alan Mulally. He said he felt
that Ford Motor Company would have gone bankrupt if it were not for Alan Mulally. At this point KTP Building
Chairperson Scott Eskridge took the podium and respectfully told Mr. Mulloy that Mr. Mulally has been successful, but
that the UAW workers are who have truly shed blood, sweat, and tears! Scott also told Mr. Mulloy that the UAW
workforce's contribution also brought this company back to prosperity. Scott also stated that the UAW workers
DEFINITELY DESERVE to be compensated for all that they have done. He also addressed the company's OVER
COMPENSATION of Mr. Mulally. Mr. Mulloy heard this message loud and clear.
UAW President Bob King first discussed the Verizon Wireless strike. Verizon is a tremendously profitable company and
is currently asking it's workforce for approximately $20,000 in concessions per year from each employee. He stated that
Verizon's demands defines corporate greed to the highest grade. Bob then addressed the council and discussed the
upcoming strike vote. He also discussed the importance of the membership participating in this vote.
Bob then addressed the contract negotiations and the importance of obtaining contractual gains for our membership. He
also expressed his thoughts about the contract and then allowed time for questions and answers. The National Ford
Council addressed our concerns to President King. Bob now has a true understanding of the membership's expectations of
the upcoming contract. The message was very respectful but very clear as well. Our membership's voice was well
represented by the local's leadership during this discussion at the council.
Jimmy Settles has a new social media program; our membership will soon be receiving a letter in the mail about this
exciting new form of communication. The letter will explain that the International UAW is making an effort to expand
communications and will be asking for email addresses and contact information from the membership. The UAW will be
setting up a Facebook page and other channels of communications for our members. Jimmy looks for this to be a
beneficial tool for the membership and will improve our knowledge of UAW business. In closing, he thanked the council
for being very cordial in expressing our concerns. He also conveyed his appreciation that the issues were relayed to both
the company and the National Ford Council with such passion.
