I know you guys are sick of campaigning so I will keep this short and to the point. My name is Patrick Mendis and I am running for Sergeant-At-Arms for Local 862. The there are several ideas I have that would help out the future of our Local. One of which is I want to set up a Young Workers Committee. Region 1A had this at a Regional level and it had helped me a lot by educating me on what I as a new UAW member needs to do to secure our future. This committee would help with educating newer members and getting them more involved. Another issue I want to address which has been brought up in here before is the running for multiple positions. I feel it should be in our bylaws that you can only hold one elected or appointed position (with the exception of National/Constitutional Delegates and Committee chairs) this would allow members who truly believe they are best for whatever job they are running for to prove they are committed to the position they are running for.
I have several other ideas that are in the infancy stages in my head. My key points are education and involvement. If we don't plan for the future we will simply be a memory of the past.
My Union education includes Grievance Handling and Collective Bargaining classes. I attended Basic Union Involvement at Black Lake. I have attended organizing classes. I was the founder of the Make Us Blue facebook page. I have so much I want to give to the members of Local 862 and I feel the best way I can do that is to be Sergeant-At-Arms.
I would also like to thank everyone that has helped my wife and I in making Louisville and LAP our home. I was scared to death to move 2 states away from our families. Sorry to inform you but we don't have any intentions of going back to Michigan. We love the winters down here.
Please don't make the mistake of voting for someone just because of a name or popularity. Vote for someone who wants to make a difference.
If you want to know any more about me please ask. I will be monitoring this thread through Saturday.
In Solidarity
