One quick question. If an employee is seriously injured or God forbid dies as a direct result of them trying to go into work after a State of Emergency has been issued, who would be held liable for their death. Ford, the UAW or the employee themself for not heeding the warning? The reason I ask is simple, the employee wouldn't be on the road if Ford would have cancelled work. Of course the UAW leadership should be working on a deal to cancel the work day due to this kind of weather, I am not talking about an inch or two of snow but the amount that we got yesterday. It should not be left up to the employee to make a decision that both the comapny and union should have made. Luckily no one was injured and no one died. Still fuel for thought when this happens again and it will happen again.

State of emergency means absolutely nothing. Governor doesnt have the power to make you stay off the roads. He can suggest not to drive but cannot forbid it, he can close roads if need be also. Employers are not forced to close because the Governor declares an emergency. If you have an accident and are injured/killed driving to work during a state of emergency the blame isnt on the employer either. Everyone has free will to decide whether or not to go to work, its an American flag flying out front. My two cents is if the roads are bad im staying home, even i can get there more than likely the parts will not. If enough dont show they usually carry you, if not burn an awol or covert a personal. Few weeks later they will schedule an OT day and you can make the cash back up times 1/2 if you need the cash.

I did a little checking and here is what I found. A State of Emergency can be called for several reason's including bad weather. Now when it is called the people of the state has to listen to what is being said during that SOE. It doesn't mean you can't drive but it can restrict your driving to an extent. Also, it is up to the Employer's to implement a bad weather policy to protect its workforce. This is where oour union needs to step up to the plate during a SOE. If both the union and the company FAILS to implement a bad weather policy, the question remains as to who would be resopnsable for the unjury and death of an employee driving in bad weather because they failed to do so. I agree, most like myself stayed home yesterday, last night and today due to the weather. For those that didn't they risked their lives and property for no more reason than the comapny and union failing to see the problem that is at hand. Yes, they can schedule a Saturday or two to make up for lost production and they will do that regardless if they sent people home or not. Why put employee's through a situation that will result in them sending you home after a couple hour's anyways. Keep in mind that not having enough to work is one thing but not having enough to call Act of God is another. There is a clause in the contract (joke) that they can deny you a personal day if it effects production.

Lets put this lazy union to work for us instead of the other way around all the time.

Legit question, are you serious? Is nothing an individuals responsibility? Ford's fault? UAW's fault? Wtf. If you don't think you can make it, stay home. If you leave the house its on you.

you are exactly right tryingtomakeit! Ford has a business to run, not what the individual responsibilities of the 10,000 local employees are. If you don't think you can make it then don't go! If you just want to stay home and enjoy the snow with your kids, then stay home and enjoy. Dont worry what Ford thinks, don't worry about what the union is going to do about it. Stay home if you want, or go to work if you want. But let the decision be yours and own it. But PLEASE quit blaming someone else for your actions!

Just my two cents but Ford really should do more to protect their employees. Many employers in our area will close their doors for a day to protect employees. I would like to see the union do more to be one our side also. Having said that, it still up to each of us to protect ourselves and our families. Hold on to your awols and use them for days like this week. Dont worry about what the company or the union will or wont do, just do what is best for you. Usually it is the folks who dont have personal days or are at their awol limit who whine the most. I chose to stay home today...

I have no awols on my record FYI and if I decide to stay home is a direct result of what our company and union have the lack of balls to do. After all, the company is the one to say come to work regardless of the weather or anything else. To me, that puts the responsiblity on them if an employee gets injured trying to get through this mess because they can't say stay at home due to weather. In the end, we will be working extra Saturday's this year because we didn't run for two day's and or night's. Yes, tryingtomakeit this is a legit question and it is one each and evry one of you should be asking our union leader's. We know the company will tell us to come in but why can't the union talk them into a reschedule for a later date in this kind of weather. Those of you that fail to see this is the one's that are so damned blindsied by what our leader's tell you. It is our job to hold our union leader's responsible. It shouldn't be that we should be responsible for the weather or deciding to stay home in this crap. Now if I was to be injured going in because of their lack of responsibilty, I just might sue both. I may not win but it would put them on notice for the future.

What does the union have to do with Ford deciding to not cancel production? Union has nothing to do with it...get real. You don't feel safe then stay home but Ford makes the call on production. If Ford gets enough to block build or run an area like stamping then they will see how many show and run it. That's exactly what they did yesterday. If enough people awol they have to pay them anyways so why not see who shows up. You get 4 awols per 18 months without any recourse and the ability to covert personal time if you miss anytime if your record is clean. Come to work everyday and when you need to take days like this you take them. If you don't feel safe then don't come. Ford does not care about your safety. Want the company to care, go work for Toyota and they will call off work anytime it snows because they don't have to pay their employees when they don't work because of weather. Afternoon shift employees will get short work week for yesterday because the union got it...that's why Toyota does not get it, but they care about their employees.

Agree 100%But shouldn't have to use MY time to cover a snow day.Just don't count me AWOL is all I ask for.THATS where the UAW should fight for us. Ex-metalman gets it. Why should we use a personal day in leiu of a snow day? Why should we risk evrything for a company that don't care about our safety? Why do we need to work for the union instead of them working for us? Now think about this, those that showed up got paid 4 hours call in pay (or whatever they call it). They will not get short work week for the rest because Ford paid them the 4 hours. The ones that didn't show up and then converted their days to personal only screwed those that didn't convert their days (if they even had days to convert), forcing the Act of God clause to NOT be used because the percentage just dropped. I am not saying Ford or the union has to be responsible for us on a warm sunny day, just on days like this that have been declared State of Emergency. Currently I am debating on whether to go in tonight (based on frigid conditions) or not. Yes, most of us do take chance's on trip to work and home everyday. It isn't about whether or not I stay home or work but it is about the company stepping up to the plate to ensure we are safe (that is even a bigger joke). The union needs to step up to the plate and do what they can to get the company to use common sense when it comes to this type of weather. I know Michigan get's more snow than us and they might be used to it but the difference is they have the equipment to handle this much snow and cold weather. WE DON'T. So you want change, you had your chnance last year but the same people got back in and look where we are now. I don't like change either but I know when it is time for a change and we are way past the time for change, way past the time.

We were told by our committeeman to not take pay for Monday. If you had, go to labor and take it out.
