As a 20 year employee at KTP and a father of a recently diagnosed Type 1 diabetic I would like to share a bit of info and ask for some opinions on a way to approach my dilemma. I currently have BCBS Michigan as my healthcare plan. I was totally shocked to learn that Ford Motor Company, a huge supporter of the JDRF, does not allow its employees, and their dependants, access to some of the most basic education and monitoring equipment for Type 1 Diabetes. When my son was first diagnosed with this disease one of the first appointments we had with a Endocrinologist was to learn how to administer the insulin that was necessary to keep my son alive. Under my plan, this is considered Diabetes education, which is not covered. Fast forward 1 year later and the doctor is recommending a device that continuosly monitors my sons blood glucose level. This would greatly reduce the amount of finger pricks and meter readings needed daily and would provide us with virtually up to the minute readings constantly. This device is covered by over 98% of private insurance and Medicare. Imagine my surprise to learn that Ford Motor Company does not allow for this device. The popular misconception is that Humana and BCBS are our insurance providers. They are not. They only administer the plans. This means that Ford Motor Company decides what is covered and not covered. I have spoken to plant Benefit Reps. but would like to push this a little further up the chain. If there is anyone out there that has been under a similar situation and got through to anyone on the corporate level, please PM me or reply here. We are currently appealing the claims denial. Thanks

Hello Publicrelations. I’d like a little more information from you, if you do not mind. I am the father of a Type 1 Diabetic. She was diagnosed about eight years ago, and honestly, I have had nearly zero issues getting the most modern and technologically advanced equipment on the market. Everything from a Dexcom BG Monitor to the Omni Pod artificial pancreas has been covered up to 90%. I have Humana as my Primary Health Insurance, so that may be the difference, and we have had to get our Endo to write statements when the dosage did not meet the default insurance expectations. But Humana has approved every single exception. We even have a Humana Nurse call us once per month to ‘check in’ with my daughter – just to make sure she is doing well and offer to answer any questions.
There were some problems a few years ago when Humana and the University of Louisville Association had a few battles, forcing us to seek another Endo. But now that Kosair is on board, our relationship with them is back to normal.
Ford and its employees are very generous to JDRF. Edsel Ford has a son with Type 1, and the relationship between Ford and JDRF goes a long way back. It’s a scary road to travel for those who have children with Type 1. There is so much to worry about, from High BG to Low BG, to Ketones, Carb counting. I offer any assistance I can give you in the form of advice, if you need it. My daughter leaves for college next year, and I can say, she is more aware of her condition than anyone. I do not worry about her being able to control her insulin intake. These kids grow up too fast with Type 1, which is unfortunate.
Private message me if you need any help. And continue to work with the Benefits Rep. They can work wonders.
