After I walked out of the union meeting tonight, I had the pleasure to talk to LTS employees and two-tier employees from LAP. Most were from trim where I spent my time in that plant. |They explained the jobs they did(I remember the wire jobs, etc. completely.) I found it astonishing they were not complaining about task, injury, or two-tier wage. They were just hungry for general information. One ex-marine shook my hand just for passing along basic information.
That is when I knew I failed the new membership.
You see, when I came into Ford, the old timers explained many things to me. They explained the importance of saving, learning the contract, understanding how to protect yourself from management, how to protect yourself from injury, how to not add work to a job, show up every day, and most important to me - how to communicate with your coworkers to cover the customer - the most important of all. (Yes, they also took great pride in telling me to "Lay in there and get it" - also! LOL)
It made me realize the elected union only has a small portion of the responsibility in communication. Everyone on the floor collectively ARE the union. It is my responsibility to share what I have learned over the years through experience and from being tutored by the elected officials. And after a resurgence in hiring that is taking place at a fast clip, I have failed to pass along much needed information to the most vulnerable of the ones around me.
I hope I can improve my communication skills to the ones that need it the most. I hope we all take the new hires under our wings and improve their lives at Ford to some degree while giving them the information they desperately need.

Well said brother.... We said. Problem here, is that they all came in together. They came in and didn't have any senior employees around to show them the way. The amount of ignorance about basic union and working principles is astonishing.

Our union has failed them. I am on b crew at KTP. I do my best to educate them, and they just don't get it. It's like beating your head into a wall.

A) I'm curious as to why you were astonished they weren't complaining? every single union member SHOULD be complaining entry level and legacy! Our IUAW is failing us and taking more money from us without even putting it to a vote! B) what is it you think entry level employees are so ignorant to? It's all written in black and white in the contracts.

I'm sorry but everything you stated is either common sense or responsibility of our elected officials. Importance of saving: well at $16 an hr there isn't much left at the end of the month to save. And being financially responsible should've been taught by their parents. Learning the contract: simply put "they can do that". The contract is only as good as the people who enforce it! Protect yourself from management: do your job as explained on the ois Protect yourself from injury: if you feel unsafe don't do it. Until health and safety bends you over and makes you. How to avoid adding of work: that should go through A crew so don't have much to do with entry level Show up for work: duh Cover the customer: stop the line for a quality issue. Only to have the union agree that quantity is more important than quality! Process coaches have to get their production bonuses remember! What entry level employees need is for the union to remember what they are supposed to stand for!

These are the people in our membership that will be voting on our retirement that they do not receive. We can take care of them now or do not expect much in retirement from them.(If we reach retirement)

As an entry level employee I appreciate your willingness to help. I just think that we as a membership need to get back to the roots of being a union. I don't like hearing settles tell us that we have to negotiate smart. He's negotiating to keep his $152000 annual salary safe and fed us the scraps.

Doesnt matter how well you take care of them, when it comes time to vote they will take care of themselves. If they aren't getting retirement & making half our pay why would they worry about us?

I disagree ..But respect your opinion..I think we deserve a raise before them. They got a raise last contract. And took the job knowing they could never get to top pay. There wasn't a clause stating if you take this job we will fight to get you top pay?I want equality but it's not gonna happen. So us first then them last..

One thing I remember the old timers teaching me was "a fair days work for a fair days pay" . I guess we can't use that one since our union think it's ok for someone to get paid less for the same work. I know they hired in knowing that, but it's not right. How can you call yourself a union when you don't see everyone as equals. The only advice I give any new hire is get the fuck out of here as fast as you can!

lmao! I'm two tier and have already been blamed for a sucky ass contract that isn't even here yet because I was all about the sign on bonus?! All I could do was laugh. I didnt realize I had so much power!! People are going to vote depending on their criteria. However, the last time I checked the numbers, Legacy out weighs two tier sooooo if all legacy stick together then you should be just fine! My wife is a legacy and I know what she (you all) have lost. I'm all for legacy to get a well deserved raise But will there ever be a point when legacy and new entry level two tiers ever see eye to eye? I'm not bitter that I make less then most. I'm bitter because I'm tired of a legacy reminding me all the time that I will never be where they are today. I don't care about a sign on bonus, I care about my future. maybe if legacy gets their raise they might ease up on us two tier and stop blaming us for what you gave up. I doubt it though

Plus one of my stipulations for a yes from me is that legacy get raise equal or greater than inflation since 2007. That's because I stand for what's right for every union member not just the tier that I fall in.

the 2nd tier should'nt be voting on things concerning only us and we should'nt be voting on issues concerning only them. during local elections,at least at my old plant, retiree's could only vote for president because that's the only person who represented them. they could'nt vote for commiteeman or chairman, etc.nobody should be voting on issues that are important to others and don't apply to them in the least. It's just plain stupid.this 2 tier shit should have never been allowed in the first place.it's demeaning to them and us.i'm not proud to be making THREE OR FOUR times in wage and benefits than the person working next to me.it's shameful!

WTF is that supposed to mean. You sound like some straight up company fuck. The point is do you want legacy workers deciding if you should get a raise? If it's left up to them your fucked. Are you different than legacy workers? do you get a pension? then i guess you are. wise up and keep your snide remarks to yourself. this isn't a joke, it's your future

We should all vote on our contract period. But you can't expect either party 1-or 2 to vote for anything but their own well being.Thats just human nature.

Wouldn't hurt 1 bit to have seperate contracts. Tier 1 votes for theirs & 2 for tier 2. Forget about getting caught up or getting back anything. 2 seperate contacts because whether or not you want to belive it this is it. This is what we are dealing with this is what it is. It's a way for the iuaw to save face because hell RTW is right around the corner. We have 2 local halls could have one for each tier.

People talk about RTW coming hell it looks to me that the UAW is imploding all on its own?The two tier was a start to get us separated and from what I've read on here it's working..Sad too..Because as much as we all gripe it's pretty hard to lose your job at Ford..

Hell, the 2nd tier counterparts on C crew fucked our area pretty hard Monday night by running 796 jobs, all while we are trying to fight added work and job cuts. Our people have left notes, stayed over to talk to them and they are just to gung ho and take the work, running crap, all while making management very happy. Our MPS and area supervisor were walking down the line Tuesday morning telling us that C crew has no problem with the added work and never complained. Of course they are only averaging 20 years younger than us and they too will be old souls trying to keep up with the next group younger than themselves in the future. So, making $15 an hour and working harder than us makes sense to me. Not all 2nd tier gave in. There were a couple that stood their ground. Face it though, what will you have to look forward to when you are 40-60 years old and you are trying to do the same job you are doing now? There will be no more "Retirement Jobs" left.

Am I missing something here because the last time I checked all added work must go through A crew! The people on my line only "try" any addition a few times until it is 100% a go on A crew. And don't know if you all are just taking shots at us or what but management saying "the other crew does it with no problem!" Has always been one of their tactics and you all know this. Also a committee person should be at any add/delete sit down and explain all this to anyone that doesn't know better! So really, get off the we're so much better than you trip, it's getting really old!!!

Like I posted, the C crew people in our area took on the extra work even before the rebalance took full effect as of yesterday. This is what blew my mind. It seems that the union rep was a no show to top things off. I don't even know if they had a sit down with C crew. Who is better than you? Never said any shift and or tier was better than any other.
