Scott,
When Toyota built their plant in Mexico, they offered to pay the workers more, but the Mexican government told them no. The Mexican economy would be all screwed up if they did. They should be paid more, but there are a lot of other factors that need to be considered when doing so, not just that they deserve it.

If pay at the Mexican plant is $2.16 dollars per hour, how come the Fusion is so expensive? I was always told that our wage was what kept car prices high.

The Fusion would sell for about $12,000 if that was the case.

Ford has set the Fusion price to make every penny of profit they can and they are raking in the dough.

Good for Ford, they need to make as much money in other countries as they can. Globalization is not going away. EVER. They need to make cars in every country but include the U.S. as your model.

As was said in the news before we voted on the contact what we get also affects the wages the suppliers have to pay. That was one reason given.

Ford always says they are going to build vehicles in another country because the wages are lower and always hold this over our head to accept lower wages. But they never pass that savings onto the customer. Corporate greed, pure and simple.
I wish everyone who voted yes on the last contract could see the picture. It's never about staying afloat or selling a vehicle at a competetive price it's about making more money and bonuses for themselves.
They do nothing but lie to the media, lie to us, lie to the international, and laugh all the way to the bank.

pmooret: imagine that you build a "widget" . this widget costs you $1 to make but the market will bring $7.50 for each one you build with enough volume of sales to run your plant at full capacity.how much would you charge for the widget?
no matter what the product is the sales price is set by the market the product is sold in. production costs have nothing to do with final sale price. thats in no way greed. it is very basic "intro to econ.".

I'm with you. I understand the old supply & demand that was taught in grammer school. Greed has nothing to do with your story. Here's my story on greed: You make a widget for $1 and sell it for $7.50. Looks like you have about a 750% mark up. That's great and I'm happy for you. But then you decide you want more. So you move your operation to Mexico where you can make the widget for $0.50. In the process you lay off three shifts of people. These people have lost their jobs, insurance, retirement, etc. not because you needed to move the operation to Mexico to keep your business afloat; after all you were making a 750% return on your product. You moved it so that you could make an 800% return on your product instead of 750%. That's greed.

It seems our friend south of the border is upset with certain U.S. government agencies allowing firearms to be smuggled across the border to the Cartels. What a shame. Our friend might as well put in a transfer to a Detroit plant.

Hope this helps . So far, though, such investment hasn't made up for the steep production shortfalls of Ford, GM, and VW in Mexico. The Mexicans have to hope that the struggling auto makers' new models will help them rebound, with the help of Mexico's flexible union rules and cheap labor. Mexican plants are considered efficient and have consistently high quality ratings. And assembly-line workers take home $8 to $10 an hour in pay and benefits -- a high wage in Mexico, but a bargain compared with the $60 it costs to employ the average U.S. unionized worker. Although labor costs account for just 10% to 15% of a finished car's cost, that margin can make a difference to Detroit's beleaguered auto makers. www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_24/b3937071_mz058.htm

Corporate greed, pure and simple. ok well globalization, and the lie of free trade are examples of greed yes. ford "not passing the savings on" is not. quite the opposite. if ford wanted to dismantle us completely passing that savings along is exactly what they would do. if the wage advantage in mexico would allow for a $12000 fusion in the u.s.( i dont believe it does but for the sake of argument)it would be awfully hard to sell a $40000 u.s. built taurus now wouldnt it?
