Obama Adds to CAP Momentum with Import-Export Loan Announcement
ByAlice Arutoff
CHICAGO -- Hundreds of employees at the Chicago Assembly Plant arrived early
Thursday morning for the opportunity to hear U.S. President Barack Obama, who
announced Ford would receive a U.S. 250 million Export-Import Bank loan.
Before his speech, Obama received a tour of the plant and a walk around of the
all-new 2011 Ford Explorer with Jim Holland, chief engineer, Explorer.
“As I told the president, it was a pleasure having him here,” said Jan
Allman, plant manager, CAP. “He was so proud, and we were delighted to have
him.”
The crowd inside the plant teemed with excitement in anticipation of the
president. They even cheered when the presidential seal was placed on the
podium.
Obama greeted CAP employees on his way to the stage, and remarked on how glad he
was to be home. “There’s nothing like coming home,” said Obama.
“Especially when your home is Chicago.”
The president discussed CAP’s history: built in 1924 to produce the Model T, a
survivor of the Great Depression and a manufacturing facility that supported
World War II efforts.
“This plant, like the entire industry, has been a source of deep pride for
generations of American workers whose imaginations and hard work led to some of
the finest cars that the world has ever known,” said Obama.
He discussed the automakers bailout and his support of the American worker.
“I refuse to walk away from this industry and American jobs. I put my faith in
the American worker. I believe the American worker can be the best in the
world.”
Obama discussed the positive turn of the industry noting that American
automakers have added 55,000 jobs since June of last year. He went further to
not the strides that Ford has been making.
“Ford dedicated itself to increasing fuel economy of more than a dozen of its
models,” said Obama. “And the Department of Energy awarded Ford a two-year
loan… and Ford used that loan to retool this factory to build the
next-generation Explorer.”
“I just got in that Explorer, and that’s an outstanding car. And over the
next two months, this plant will bring on a second shift of 1,200 workers to
build that Explorer, nearly doubling your workforce.”
The president’s biggest moment of the speech is when he announced the 250
million Export-Import Bank loan that Ford would receive to help export more than
200,000 vehicles over seas, including the Explorer which will sell in up to 90
countries. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Dennis Taylor,
team leader, CAP. “We understand that we are going to be able to export and we
are proud if it.”
CAP employee Mike Deakin noted that Obama is an outstanding public speaker. “I
didn’t expect to be moved, but he was great.”
“I’m so proud of the Chicago Assembly team,” said Allman. “They
represent what Ford is about, passion for the company and creating great
products for the customers.”
