"We're going to transform the Explorer plant into the most high-tech small-car plant we have in the world," said VP Jim Tetreault.
He knows we all want to know is what the future holds for the plant
"It's going to build other vehicles from our global, compact car platform," Tetreault said. "We'll build several new vehicles off that platform and no, I can't tell you what they are today."
That's good to hear. Weird that he mentions small cars but all we hear is we are getting the Escape. And if this is true we better enjoy our time off because will we be working a lot when we return.

Hopefully that was a mis statement, small car is b platform, which is what just happened to the GM Orion plant. If we are still C platform we'll be fine.

Just re-read what he said, he did say "compact car". Hopefully I'm not reading too much into that, or maybe he is just still trying to keep Escape or whatever it is secret.

C platform is considered "compact" vehicle class. Focus, C-Max,Transit Connect and Escape are C platform vehicles. B platform is considered "sub-compact". Fiesta is a B platform. I've been told that our plant is going to be retooled to be to build all "C" platforms and also the next platform up which I think is called "CD". Fusion is built on this platform. NOT saying we are getting the Fusion. Just hearing that we will have capability to built vehicles in this class.

I don't think Ford could make much of a profit on a sub-compact car made in America even if everybody takes a 50percent pay cut. That's why the fiesta is made in Mexico.

hotcarl is right.
How in the world could someone take a public statement like this from a Ford VP and turn it into something negative is beyond me.
Everything is positive for LAP right now. Try to enjoy it.

Wasn't trying to turn it into something negative, the "small car" part just threw me, its a little hard to not be cynical after you've been lied to so many times. I do think its great that he actually said as much as he did officially.

I think Ford is very serious about making a product(s) here at LAP. I'm sure a good enough profit will be made, also. I just hope the our local union doesn't agree to some issues that will cause people to take a pay cut or a serious loss in benefits.

Ford is in position for record profit with the changes made during the "last opening of the contract" .....Sources have been quoted as saying the changes Ford seeks for plant refurb are not monetary...Jimmie Settles Det News, after local 900 settled their local agreement.....Time will tell what that means?? could not find the link but I know I read it

That's the most hopeful info management has told the public, so far. That indeed sounds wonderful for everyone involved in LAP. Let's make sure as the plant ramps up, the company brings people back to work in a way that's fair to everybody. Come on, 2011!!

It may not be money out of your pocket, but rather efficiencies in managing the operation. Teams would be a good example as would general, or 2 trade maintenance. I would bet that reducing classifications and less premium pay for alternative work schedules are at the top of the list.

I would bet that reducing classifications and less premium pay for alternative work schedules are at the top of the list. Never fails to amaze me....This is the classic "it is OK to take from someone else just not me" motto... The Union has expressed interest in taking advantage of the team concept for skilled trades in the past but the company does not want to get rid of their maintenance bosses. Team leaders could be elected or bid jobs (the company wants appointed) and be responsible for the teams and do away with a few bosses but the company doesn't want that either. The union wants all in or nothing on this matter. Just remember with ever efficiency comes a reduction in bodies also!!! My point is this... As a union brother you never volunteer any take back or offer a take back no matter which side of the line you come from skilled/production. Even if you are anti-maintenance/production! I am quite sure the union is gonna do what is in the best interest for all of us. However ugly it may be...for all parties...

If you are pointing a finger at me thinking I'm in favor of it, you're wrong. You did not comprehend the post if that is the case. The company is trying to save money. If the UAW goes along, it is in the UAW and Fords' best interest to make it as painless as possible. I like the status quo pertaining to the above.

people from LAP need to find out what the agreement is at MAP, it probably will be the same agreement they got. You want to know what map got.... OK here goes.... The wayne complex in wayne Mi was 3 separate plants MTP, (Expedition) WAP, (Focus) & ISA (Stamping for Focus and South Body) MTP closed 12/22/08 Local agreement allowed in event of layoff (permanent layoff) for employees with seniority, transfer rights to either WAP or ISA...After brief 3 month layoff WAP & ISA did except MTP employees, half went to WAP other half to ISA.....approximately 2 yrs later the new MAP is ramping up, job 1 is expected Jan 2011, although sources say...maybe pushed back, they are told they will get another vehicle within a year (C-Max) then the electric Focus ....basically 3 vehicles, 2 former MTP union officials landed @ IUAW WAP (new MAP north) just negotiated new local agreement although none of the people I know, knows what is in local agreement...waiting on ISA to settle (south MAP) to announce?? ISA union officials control new(SOUTH) MAP bodyshop.... ISA people (production / trades) were told because of new body less people are needed so 250 production people are being transferred to assembly side (trim) controlled by former wap union... ISA trades are being laid off they plan on keeping (numbers subject to change) ...keeping 103 electricians, 12 PF, 17 M/W's, 44 die makers,.......leaves somewhere around 75 trades being laid off, new buyout packages being offered at MAP (numbers subject to change)......Trades facing layoff are being offered opportunity to work temporary (6 months) construction crew to mothball old WAP plant TRUE story.....ISA should have settled first... then maybe WAP employees would have faced transfer and layoff
