I have a 98 Explorer 4.0 v6 with 140k miles. Its running rough and when you accelerate, it takes a while to pick up speed. Everynow and then the speed will die down but will pick back up. I took it to a shop and they said it may be the catalylatic converter and exhaust system. And wanting to charge me $700.
Anyone had this problem and any suggestions where else to take it to be looked at?

Yep it could be catalytic converter. Also go to autozone and have them check it for any stored trouble codes. My friend had one running rough and it was 3 out of 4 oxygen sensors. Good luck.

Now the repair shop is telling me it is one of the timing chan tensioners. No one wants to touch it . Any good mechanic shops you all recommend?

You need to talk to Pat White...master mechanic that works at LAP. Check your inbox...I will send you his home number.
