A fire ravaged a building at the Hampton In Highland apartment complex Thursday
night.
HIGHLAND | As many as 60 people were displaced by a fire that raced through a
25-unit apartment building in the Hampton in Highland apartment complex
Thursday evening.
"It went fast, I can tell you that," said 27-year-old Abhishek Paramjpe, who
lived on the third floor, where many residents said the fire started. "When I
got outside, it spread like a bushfire."
Firefighters arrived about 6 p.m. to find a third-floor apartment on fire, said
Mike Pipta, operations chief for the Highland Fire Department.
One firefighter suffered a minor knee injury as several local departments worked
to quell the blaze in one of the many buildings that make up the complex.
The partially charred sign outside the building appeared to read 9456 Lambeth
East.
The fire, visible from blocks away while sending smoke billowing through
surrounding areas, extended through the third-floor roof even as three ladder
trucks sprayed water from above.
By the time firefighters extinguished the flames about 8 p.m., the fire caused
parts of the roof to collapse as it spread through much of the eastern half of
the building.
Firefighters still were at the scene as of 8 p.m. and likely would be there all
night, Highland Fire Chief William Timmer said.
Crews from Griffith, Lake Ridge, Munster, Schererville and St. John assisted.
The American Red Cross provided food and water for residents.
Josh Weddington, 25, who lives on the second floor of the building, said he was
laying down for an afternoon nap and smelled what he thought was something
burning in an oven.
He left his apartment, knocking on doors along the way and saw the flames when
he got outside. He did not hear any smoke detectors go off, he said.
David Cross, 33, said he was sleeping before his midnight shift as a jail guard
when he awoke to commotion outside his door.
"The maintenance people were kicking doors and I saw fire falling onto my
balcony," he said. "I threw on my clothes and ran."
Cross didn't notice any smoke until he opened his front door and tried to
escape but was turned back by immense smoke that sent him the other way out the
building.
He and other tenants said they didn't have renter's insurance.
Timmer said the building would be shut down for at least the night and wasn't
immediately able to say what caused the fire or how many of the units would be
accessible today.
