Hello, I would like to bring your attention on a new post published on the
UAWLAP.org Site.
Details of the post follow.

Jefferson County Public Schools Book Buddies Program
From David Wimsatt, LAP Education Committee ChairpersonDuring the retooling of
LAP and with time off from our regular jobs, have you thought about giving
something back to the community? There are many ways to volunteer and make a
change in a person’s life. The JCPS Book Buddies Program is just one of the
many opportunities available. This program has been in operation for years and
the benefits to the students are amazing. Having volunteered for this program
I can speak about how it helped a struggling student and how I benefitted as
well. You don’t need to be skilled in reading strategies; just a person who
loves to read and someone who is willing to instill that passion in a young
student. This program is as much about mentoring as it is reading. Please
consider giving just a little of your time to help a struggling student.
The following is program information provided by Susan Shortt, Middle School
Coalition Coordinator, Jefferson County Public Schools:
Purpose of “Book Buddies” program: To foster an appreciation for books and
enjoyment of reading for struggling 6th grade readers and to give students
one-on-one contact with an adult reader on a regular basis. Volunteers will not
be tutoring students or teaching reading. They will simply read books with young
people.
Adult volunteer responsibilities:
Commit to one class period of reading with a student book buddy at least every
other week until a book is read plus travel time to and from school.
Be prepared to read the book to the student, encouraging some reading by the
student when he/she is ready to do so.
Engage in informal book talk with the student. (Suggestions provided on “Book
Talk Tip Sheet” from JCPS.
Arrive on appointed day and time for reading session – or notify school
contact person if a change is necessary.
Student responsibilities:
Choose a book from the “Book Basket” provided by JCPS.
Bring the book to each reading session with the adult book buddy.
Follow along during reading and participate in book talk with the book buddy.
School responsibilities:
Contact adult volunteers to arrange schedule for reading sessions.
Select 6th grade students who can meet on adult’s preferred schedule and pair
each with an adult volunteer.
Provide students with book choices and record each student’s choice so copies
can be ordered for each adult and each student.
Find a space in the school for book buddies to meet and read.
Middle School Coalition/JCPS Middle School Support Team responsibilities:
Serve as the initial contact for volunteers.
Provide books for students and adults.
Provide “Book Talk Tip Sheet” for adult volunteers.
If you like to read to young people and want to volunteer in this pilot project,
please contact Susan Shortt at JCPS. (Phone: 485-3946, Fax: 485-3821, Email:
susan.shortt@jefferson.kyschools.us)
We hope that you will seriously consider taking advantage of this wonderful
opportunity to share your love of reading with a young person. We are genuinely
excited about the impact this experience could have on the lives of our students
and the adults who volunteer as their Book Buddies.
Sincerely,
David Wimsatt
LAP Education Committee Chairperson
