They are also trying VW, Hyundai, etc. in the south. The strike fund is over funded due to GM and Chrysler NOT being able to strike until 2015. There was around 800 million in it a year or two ago I believe.
Without the increased membership - the International UAW may cease to exist.( Bob Kings words - not mine) Where would that leave us?
Oh - and they took $23 Million out of it to fund the IUAW expenses through 2013 to keep them going. That was voted on and approved at the Constitutional Convention. Black Lake was taken of the market right after that.(It was for sale with no bidders looking at it)
Jimmy Hoffa would be proud! ;D

Ya know I hate to see them waste money like that but if it increase's the membership and we can get some of those transplants organized, that would be in our best interest in the long run. We see the here and now and sometimes we just don't see where the future lies. we need those transplants organized and we need them on our level otherwise John Q. Public will still see us as the lowest scum of the earth.
If they spend the $60 million and do indeed get them organized it will be well worth the cost. I for one look into the future not just the here and now. I want my raise's back as well as everything else we lost that is why we need to get them organized so it will be in our favor.

If you compare us to them in that scenario we do not have a pension in the future with pattern bargaining with the transplants. Lay in there and get it until your 62!

It's our money and it should stay with us. If they want to put it to good use they should use it to shore up the retirees health care fund instead of using it as a slush fund.

I say we need to get them in the UAW or our pay will only go down.

We have to keep trying to grow, the size of our membership is the only way to have any power.

My concern is; how do we know if these people are UAW material?
Can they drink a case of beer 7 days a week? Do they take painkillers because the sun came up? Can they meet the obligatory gay joke quota of one joke per every five minutes of a ten hour shift? Can they get 10% of the workforce to go out on medical every summer? What about divorce and DUIs? If at least 60% of their current workforce isn't divorced already...I say it's a no-go. They can offset that with a 75% DUI rate. And what about retiree mortality rates? If their retirees survive more than 5 years after departure...we're gonna need to bring that life expectancy down, preferably with the aforementioned case of beer a day to wash down the OCs.
In the end, I don't know if the good folks at VW and Hyundai are ready for the "shock and awe" of the UAW lifestyle. Not to mention....boy are they going to be let down!!!
