Kentucky Jobs with Justice to host “Lunch and Learn – Get the Facts on the Minimum Wage in Louisville”
Louisville – On Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014 Kentucky Jobs with Justice will host a “Lunch and Learn – Get the Facts on the Minimum Wage” at Smokey’s Bean with special guests Councilwoman Attica Scott (D1) and Congressman John Yarmuth.
“Everyday, people in Louisville – women, seniors, and youth – work minimum wage jobs to try and make ends meet. When we raise poverty-level wages, we are investing in Louisvillians who work paycheck-to-paycheck.” – Councilwoman Attica Scott (D1)
At the Lunch and Learn – Get the Facts on the Minimum Wage, Councilwoman Scott and Congressman Yarmuth will serve lunch while having a conversation about the proposed minimum wage ordinance, newly released data about the local minimum wage, and working in one of the industries most affected by the proposed minimum wage increase.
Everyone is invited to come purchase lunch and be a part of the conversation on why raising the minimum wage is important to our community.
Smokey’s Bean recently became a union shop, with the workers being a part of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 227. Owner Erinn Lee has been a vocal supporter of raising the minimum wage both locally and nationally.
“A livable minimum wage will help workers take the steps necessary to break the cycle of poverty, immediately reduce dependence on public assistance, and increase the spending power of millions of American consumers to help grow our economy,” said Congressman Yarmuth, who is cosponsoring legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. “Raising the wage will strengthen both workforces and families in our community and across the country.”
The proposed Louisville ordinance calls for the Minimum wage to increase to $8.10 per hour on July 1, 2015. Then, it would increase to $9.15 per hour on July 1, 2016 and finally increase to $10.10 per hour on July 1 2017.
The proposed Louisville minimum wage ordinance will have it’s first hearing in the Labor and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday, September 23rd at 2:00 pm.
