Volunteers Needed for Halloween Party at the Zoo - This is a time when we gather volunteers to help out by dressing up in “not so scary” costumes, passing out candy, and making the children feel excited as they go from station to station getting goodies. This year UAW/Ford will have our Volunteer Day at the Louisville Zoo on October 4, 2014. We are in the need of 70-100 volunteers from both plants. The hours will be from 4:00pm - 9:30pm and you will be required to be there the whole time. We suggest you arrive at the zoo no later than 3:30pm. Please contact Tara Britt (LAP) at 502-419-4284 or Vera Newton (KTP) at 281-408-6029 for information and/or to sign-up.
War On Labor - There will be a bus traveling to Paducah, KY on October the 11th to fight the war on labor. There is a battle ground stand up and fight back program that will convene at 12:00pm (Paducah time). The bus will depart from the Louisville Assembly Plant Union Hall, located at 3000 Fern Valley Road, at 8:00am sharp. There will be refreshments on the way there. Please wear your union clothing representing your local union.
Piston Automotive Gains UAW Recognition - I want to personally thank the members of UAW Local 862 who participated in the plant site leafleting and informational pickets or those who may have contacted someone that they know working at Piston Automotive. Last Friday the UAW gained recognition at Piston Automotive in Louisville. The NLRB election that was held yielded an 80% yes vote of the employees who voted in the ballot election. This continued effort to gain recognition will help us all achieve the density needed to strengthen the UAW as we move forward.
UAW/FORD Art Collaborative - The UAW-Ford National Programs Center (NPC) is looking for artists to compete for a chance to display their artwork in the NPC-sponsored 2014-2015 UAW-Ford Community Art Collaborative exhibition, which will be held next year. All U.S. Ford full-time employees (union and non-union) are eligible to enter the competition, which is open to original artwork. The deadline to request an entry form is Sept. 26. All info and registration is available at UAW-Ford Art Collaborative Contest | UAW-Ford National Programs Center
Essay and Slogan Contest - For the past 25 years, the Office of the Secretary of State has held a statewide Essay and Slogan Contest for Kentucky students. The contest is a fantastic way to garner recognition (and valuable prizes!) for students, and it helps them get engaged early in our democratic process and demonstrate a commitment to active citizenship. Please visit www.sos.ky.gov/contests for more information, including prizes, rules, prompts, and entry forms for the 2014-2015 Essay and Slogan Contests.

We had a great turnout for the 2014 UAW Local 862 Picnic. This year’s picnic brought over 3000 UAW members and their families to our picnic on the Waterfront’s Great Lawn. There were several great comments on the improvements to the picnic from last year. We will work on some of the few suggestions for improvement to next year’s picnic.
Employee Discount – the Shoe Carnival in Springhurst Towne Center is offering a 30% discount off your entire purchase on September 28th from noon until 5pm. Volunteers Needed - Jeff Donohue is running for re-election for KY State House 37th District. UAW Kentucky State CAP will be providing lunch for all union volunteers and their family members that help. Come out and show your support for one of our very own UAW members in the KY State House of Representatives. The location will be the LAP Union Hall on Fern Valley.
