Right to work
Once again the conservatives in the Kentucky state Senate have passed a right
to work bill, so I thought I would add some facts to the debate.
The conservatives would lead you to believe that not having this legislation
hurts economic development in our state. However, without this law Kentucky
leads the nation in new business creation and is fourth in the nation in site
selection by businesses looking to relocate or expand.
Median household income in states that are RTW is $6,437 less than in states
not RTW ($46,402 vs. $52,839). States that are RTW are less likely to have
job-based health insurance as other states (56.2 percent compared with 60.1
percent). States with RTW laws spend $3,392 less per pupil on elementary and
secondary education for our children, and according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, states with RTW laws have a 36 percent higher rate of
workplace deaths. Kentucky is doing just fine without this legislation.
