I've heard that Ford has bought the pickle plant on the other side of I-65 and is going to build a stamping plant for LAP there. The property has an access road next to the train tracks that goes under I-65 and could meet up with LAP. Yard dogs could shuttle stamped parts. I heard they paid $136, 000 or so/acre for the property.
....... but you know how rumors are.

Well the old Parmount Pickle plant is gone ..... has been for years ..... it sat on the property where Five Star , Wendy's, Subway , Asian Pot ect is today . Back in 2001 when it was still standing and vacant Ford leased it to use during the launch of the new 2002 Explorer. Had a bunch of hoists set up in there and they reworked Explorer's over there for like 3 months or so . They even quit tag relief while it was going on because most relief people were over there . Any of you LAP originals who were around then remember that ? There is however some vacant land in behind all that so maybe that's it .....

I remember the pickle plant days. I was a utility in trim. I did not have enough seniority to go over there. Those that did raked in monster OT.

I've been hearing bits and pieces. Couldn't figure out where they were going to buy land but for a price there's always land available. I noticed they have been doing some drainage work on the land to the right side of north bound I-65, just south of Fern Valley Rd; even clearing out trees perhaps so that the ground will dry out. Maybe someone is trying to get all of the drainage issues in order.

Looked at a satellite map and it looks like the street at the corner of Fern Valley and the Taco Bell is named Paramount Park Dr and there is vacant land at the end of it that backs up to the tracks. Maybe I'll drive back there and see how much land is there. How much ground do they need for a stamping faculity?

id say that there is zero truth to this rumor. Having a stamping plant down the street saves zero money as compared to stamping the parts at KTP. Parts still have to be trucked over to the plant either way. KTPs third press is about a month away from being ready & then a fourth press is set to begin construction. Just dont see any benefit whatsover to building & manning a seperate facitlity.

I work in stamping at KTP. The new press is for the aluminum SD. It is set up for aluminum. Although the two older presses can press steel - Martinrea of Shelbyville continues to stamp tons of parts for both plants due to our lack of capacity. Additional capacity is needed in Louisville. That does not mean they will not decide to add more presses at KTP to insourse the remainder of the parts. But someone is getting presses. I've heard Lap. If they have to build and staff regardless- it makes sense to build and staff at the facility that needs the parts to eliminate transportation, meet quality demands, and have parts just in time without overstocking warehouses.(we have no warehouse space left) The cost of buiding, staffing, equiping, and maintaining may be equal. At that point- location may have been the deciding factor. Another building Is needed to add a press at either location. My sources have told me LAP

If LAP does get a facility, there will be no need to expand KTP stamping further. The 4th press construction that was to occur at KTP was stopped.... The digging was supposed to have started in February. KTP may still be in the running.......but signs are pointing accross town.

Look on site. The powerhouse is anything but and could be demoed. All oil house activities could be moved elsewhere in the plant. If they take trailer space, the off site area could be for trailer storage.

More rumors: 1. Location will be at LAP, where the Mod Center is currently located 2. Mod Center activities will be relocated, or housed in the newly constructed facility 3. Press room will be new construction 4. Twelve new Schuler presses or tandem press lines have been ordered 5. Production will primarily be class A surface body panels, or some structural components 6. Most production will be "chop & drop," components requiring little or no pre-assembly or welding 7. Production will be of components currently produced at Chicago & MAP 8. Free'd up capacity at Chicago & MAP is needed due to increased sales for the F150

This is great news!
I'm sure there will be a line of out of town transfers with 20 plus years seniority to come fill these great jobs! I wish them nothing but the best!

Just something they can use as an excuse why they can't give us anything in the next contract.
