Explore Careers. The goal is to give every 7th grader in a JCPS middle school
the opportunity to meet with a professional to hear about their career and the
path that got them there. In order to reach that goal, JCPS needs 1,200 citizens
to give 1 hour of their time. Make the Connection will happen during the month
of October, and there are flexible locations and times. It is a fulfilling
experience for volunteers to connect with students at a transitional point in
their lives. Volunteers will conduct two 30-minute conferences with three
seventh-grade students during each 30 minute session. For further details,
contact the Union Hall at 502-969-9136, Suellen, our liaison with JCPS. SEE THE
OTHER SIDE! Let’s make this a banner year and let our kids know we care.
JCPS Make the Connection Volunteer Guide
This guide was created to assist you in starting a conversation with your

handout. There is also a list included with this packet. You may need to guide
them in choosing the correct cluster for your career.
2) Remind students of the purpose of Make the Connection.
Many people in the Louisville community feel that 7th grade is a very important
time. We know that you are
beginning to think about the future, and your future will affect the entire
community. I am here for you to talk about education and your future plans. I
hope I can offer advice that may be helpful to you.
3) Invite students to introduce themselves. They will have the following
information completed on their handout:
Name: _____________________________ Favorite school subject:

4) Invite students to begin asking the questions from their handout. You may
need to prompt them and make sure each student gets to ask a question. It is
okay for you and/or the students to ask follow-up questions.
What does someone in your career do?
What things did you learn in school that helped you most in your career?
How often do you have to work with others (customers, colleagues, etc.)? What
kinds of activities do you do as a group?
How do you use time management skills?
What can I do now to help prepare me for my future career interest?
*This is a great time for the students to discuss their career goals and for you
to offer advice/suggestions on their plans.
5) Do you have other questions for me?
6) Wrap Up – “Thank you for meeting with me today. I enjoyed the chance to
talk to you and I learned a lot! I hope you stay in schools and do your best
because it won’t be long before you’ll be a leader in our community! Good
Luck!”
