HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS SEMINAR - Please join us on March 3, 2018 at 10:00am for a Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar. Human Trafficking is a serious and growing problem in our schools, work places, and community. Dawne Gee, WAVE 3 News Anchor and Community Volunteer, will moderate. We will host prominent community leaders for a panel discussion to educate local residents and the union community. Learn what it is, how to spot victims of human trafficking and what you can do to help. It will be held at the UAW 862 Union Hall (LAP) located at 3000 Fern Valley Road. This is free and open to the public. You must RSVP to Derby City CLUW (502) 694-2589 or by email at derbycitycluw@aol.com.
UNION ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOP – The UAW Local 862 Young Workers and Education Committees will present a Union Engagement Workshop beginning in March. The sessions will be held on Sundays at 1:00pm at the LAP Union Hall (3000 Fern Valley Rd) and will last an average of 90 minutes. ALL members (KTP, LAP, Leadec, USA) are invited to attend. Members attending all four sessions of the workshop will receive a special token of appreciation for your participation and be entered into a special drawing to be held April 22nd. If possible, please RSVP with either UAW Local 862 Union Hall (502-969-9136 or 502-241-9491). Sessions and topics are as follows:
· March 18: Leadership’s Rolls and Responsibilities, UAW Membership 101
· March 25: Diversity, Union Meeting Structure thru Recording Secretary

THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR (DOL) PROPOSED “TIP THEFT” – The DOL has proposed a rule that would make it legal for employers to pocket their workers’ tips, as long as they pay those workers at least the minimum wage. The proposed rule rescinds portions of longstanding DOL regulations that prohibit employers from taking tips. We estimate that if the rule is finalized, every year workers will lose $5.8 billion in tips, as tips are shifted from workers to employers. DOL has masked the fact that this rule would be a windfall to restaurant owners and other employers. Of course, once employers have full control of tips, one of the things they could do with those tips is distribute them to “back of the house” workers like dishwashers and cooks. The proposed rule does not require employers to distribute the tips, so employers would be no more likely to share tips with back-of-the-house workers than they would be to make any other choice about what to do with a business windfall, including using the money to make capital improvements to their establishments, to increase executive pay, or to line their own pockets.
