You probably have a either a cd jammed or the changer is stuck between slots. This happened to me on an '04 explorer a couple of years ago. I too like you didn't want to take it to the dealer and pay an arm and a leg to fix it so I took the radio/cd player out of the dash and took it apart. My wife was agasht, but I figured what do I have to loose? If it exploded into a hundred pieces, I would just get one from the junk yard or buy a new one, which probably would be about the same as the dealer would charge to fix it right? Anyway, as I recall there were only 2 screws holding it in place along with a couple of clips and it came out fairly easily. I opened the case w/o parts flying out and used a small screw driver to unjam the cd changer that was caught between slots. I put it back together and it worked fine. Spent about an hour on it, so good luck.

You could also try driving over a speed bump real fast and seeing if it will jar it loose. My mother-in-law said that her cd player had jammed and done the same as you described and had asked me about fixing it for her, but she hit a speed bump and unjammed it before I could get time to work on it.

Hell I'll take it off-roading for a day and see if I can jar it loose.

Punisher, it has happened in a couple of my Fords. I always get mine out by sliding an old cd in and out slightly and tapping it against the jammed one. After 4-5 time it usually pops out. And if you can see it in the slot, try a small pair of tweezers. That works too.

I have had the same problem and solved it by unhooking the battery for awhile, then rehook.
