All we've been hearing is how the govt. "owns" GM and therefore
has an interest in going after Toyota.

Every major corporation on the planet that trades in the United States has lobbyists that take care of their local alderman, mayors, governers, their states senators, and all of congress. Buying dinners, paying for trips, and in return the company avoids any of the B.S. that Joe Shmo (who actually believes his vote counts) has to deal with.
All we vote for, is for who gets to get richer next, and that's why these candidates are all willing to spend their own millions on campaigns.
