Hello, I would like to bring your attention on a new post published on the
UAWLAP.org Site.
Details of the post follow.
In Solidarity,
Steven M. Stone
Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnell blocking the extension of unemployment
assistance for long-term jobless workers and aid to cash-strapped states.
By the end of this week, nearly 1 million people who’ve lost their jobs and
can’t find work will lose extended unemployment benefits. Another 900,000
people face layoffs because of severe budget crises in the states.
This is a crisis. But the Republican senators would rather prove they’re the
“Party of No” than roll up their sleeves and fix the real problems of real
people.
How long are we going to let them get away with this assault on working people?
Call 877-442-6801 today and tell Sens. Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnell to stop
blocking the extension of unemployment assistance for long-term jobless workers
and aid to cash-strapped states.
Again Thursday night, the Republican senators (with help from Democrat Ben
Nelson and Independent Joe Lieberman) voted as one to continue blocking H.R.
4213, the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act. They’d already carved
COBRA health care aid for long-term jobless workers out of the legislation—but
that wasn’t enough.
As Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) told the New York Times: “It is just the politics
of the time....We are just into a mode where there is a lot of Republican
resistance to voting for anything the Democrats are for or the White House is
for....It is an election year.”
Wow. Long-term joblessness is at its highest level since the 1930s. Half of
jobless workers have been unemployed for more than six months. And five to six
other workers are also vying for every job they apply for.
Letting their unemployment and health care assistance run out is disastrous. How
are people who’ve been tossed out of work supposed to live?
And how can our economy recover if we allow another 900,000 people to be tossed
out because of state budget holes?
But to the Republicans, it’s all just politics.
Help stop the Republican blockade of help for long-term jobless workers and
cash-strapped states.
Call 877-442-6801 today and deliver this message to Sens. Bunning and
McConnell:
Not since the Great Depression have so many U.S. workers been out of work
for so long.
It is irresponsible to allow partisan politics to push you to block
unemployment and health care aid to jobless families and rescue assistance
for states to avert 900,000 layoffs.
Working people are counting on our elected leaders to create jobs and
prevent more jobs from being destroyed. That’s your job—not creating
blockades in the Senate.
Come November, voters will be rating you on one thing: jobs and the
economy. Not partisan obstructionism. Do the right thing now and stop
blocking H.R. 4213.
