Well how should I start? My brother in law called and asked if I would help change out his spark plugs on his 2004 F150 truck. I started on the first plug and SNAP the damn thing broke in half. I said oh shit I have never had that happen before. We went in and called the dealer's parts counter and asked if they had a tool to remove the broken plug and he asked what type of car I had and told him. He said uh oh, I'll transfer you to service.
The service guy answered the phone and told him of the situation. He said it is a very common problem with the year and motor. He said it was bad engineering on Fords behalf but, since then they have corrected the issue. Well, my brother in law was shit out of luck. He said have it towed in and they would change out the plugs but cannot give an estimate because it takes a long time to change out a broken plug and it depends on how many plugs break. I told him we would get back with him.
Well, in short he was pissed. We called around to some local garages and they told us they did not do that year of the truck because of the issue. One garage had to eat lots of labor because they quoted the customer a price and stuck with it not knowing about the problem. Soooo, I called a Napa and they sell a tool to take out a broken plug but, it cost $120 and takes about a half hour to take one broken plug out and you have to have a compressor to blow the porclin from the broken plug out of the hole to make sure it does not get into the engine.
He had his truck towed into the shop and guess what? They called the next afternoon and told him his truck was ready. Total bill for changeing out 8 spark plugs.......$1048.52
He was steaming hot needless to say. He politely told me I could take my A-Plan and shove it up my ass, because he will never buy a Ford again. I have been looking around on the internet and holy shit! There are a ton of people haveing the same issue. Looks like a class action lawsuit is comeing to try to rectify this situation by some of the comments made. I told him of this and he has since kept his reciept and all the old broken plugs.
I just wonder if you put the stock plugs back in will you have the same problem next time you try to change the plugs out?

Wow, just wow! Looks like they have a TSB but, from what I read this TSB does not work. They still break.
