The vote to divert funds from the strike fund to the general fund until 2013 was voted on by our representatives to the 35th UAW Constitutional Congress. (They were elected by local 862 members) The IUAW has been hurting financially too. They diverted the funds to shore up the IUAW.
I personally feel that a diversion of this type looks bad against the IUAW. It appears to be a 'raiding' of the strike fund. But remember, GM and Chrysler gave up the right to strike until 2015. That does leave a surplus to be used until 2013 and gives two more years after that to increase the strike fund by 2015.
With that said, now is not the time to weaken the IUAW's ability to operate, bargain, and maintain some of it's top talent. Ford's hourly will be needing their full strength at the bargaining table in Sept. 2011.
Save your money for next year people!
