Stone Governor Beshear Orders Flags to Half-staff on July 26 FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 23, 2010) – Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Monday, July 26, 2010 in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. According to the Department of Defense, Sgt. Matthew W. Weikert, 29, of Jacksonville, Ill., died July 17 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Funeral services for Sgt. Weikert will be held on July 26 at 11 a.m. Central time at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Ill. Burial services will immediately follow at Liberty Cemetery in Jacksonville. Gov. Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset that day. Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.
