People can be indoctrinated to believe and act in extreme ways. Nazi propaganda is one example of how extreme it can be. Of course the US has probably used it longer than any of us have been around.
If someone hears something often enough they will eventually believe it. If this is taught to kids for 12 years, it will influence the way they think as adults.
