Residents Can Dispose Of Expired Drugs Oct. 7-9:
Do you have expired or unused medications that you do not know how or where to dispose of correctly? Several organizations have joined together to offer residents of Louisville/Jefferson County three opportunities to get rid of expired drugs – without even getting out of their cars. The drive-through disposal sites will be Oct. 7, 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The disposal sites are:
Ø Thursday, Oct. 7, St. Denis Catholic Church, 4205 Cane Run Road .
Ø Friday, Oct. 8, Episcopal Church Home, 7504 Westport Road .
Ø Saturday, Oct. 9, Urban Government Center , 810 Barret Ave.
Items that can be disposed are expired and unused medications -- bulk and loose capsules; medications that should have been kept cold but were not, and creams, ointments, eye drops and nasal sprays. Due to the volume of drugs that will be taken to the site, the coordinators ask that immediately before bringing them, all tablets and capsules should be put into a plastic bag. Vials should also be placed in a separate bag and bottled liquids and tubes of medication into another. All personal information should be marked out or removed from medicine containers.
For safety reasons, used or unused sharps (needles that have been used), hypodermic needles, lances, cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items cannot be disposed of at the site.
Coordinators of the event warn that drugs should never be flushed down the drain or toilet, burned, or thrown in the trash because of the danger of contaminating the environment (even the drinking water) or releasing toxic substances into the air. Drugs discarded in the trash can also be scavenged from trash receptacles and sold or used illegally.
Sponsors of the event are the Catholic Charities Senior Services, ElderCare 4 Families, Kentucky SeniorMedicare Patrol, Louisville Metro Police, Louisville Metro Solid Waste, Senior Pharmacy Solutions and TRIAD with the Support of ElderCare 4 Families, Home Instead and Right at Home Care Agencies.
We appreciate that Louisville Metro Police and Louisville Metro Solid Waste will be on site to make sure the products are handled properly and disposed of according to EPA standards.
For additional information, call Jackie Gahlinger at 637-9786 or Metro Solid Waste Management at 574-3571.
