Years ago our beloved Dave Farley attempted to get me, and the other caliper install operators to walk BETWEEN a giant turntable and the safety rail guarding it to get to stock.
We occasionally hit the overtravel with our hoist beam as we went AROUND the turntable to get to other stock to its side.
All that needed to happen was to have the overtravel moved about 6 inches.
Instead, we would shut the line down while attempting to get to the stock.
It infuriated him so much so that he personally came down and got in my face about it.
His solution was for the operator to WALK BEHIND the safety rail and the turntable, a BLATANT safety hazard. If I didnt do that, then I was shutting the line down on purpose, and would get spanked I guess.
He told me he had convinced the operators on the other shifts to do that.
My response? If he was willing to put that specific instruction on paper, over his signature, I'd do it.........
I never heard from him about it again.
At the end of the day, some in managment are PERFECTLY willing to sacrifice the safety of the operators on the line to advance thier goals. This is a guy that the company evidently loves and keeps promoting, yet he tried to scheme/lie to get the caliper install operators to literally walk into a piece of moving machinery.
I found out later that he had told all of us the same story, and I believe on guy actually did it. If the button that drove the turntable had been hit by the stocker, or another operator (it was several feet away) then you'd be lucky if it just broke your legs........ Guess who'd be the first out there to "investigate" the accident and try to pin it on the operator.......
And yet we have meeting after meeting about how WE'RE supposed to work safely.
I've got other managment safety stories, but none this dramatic, and of course you are all welcome to share them here. Nothing will change though..........
