Ford said today that sales of its cars and trucks in the U.S. increased 19% in March as the Dearborn automaker outsold General Motors for the first time since February 2010.
In March, Ford sold 212,777 cars and trucks while General Motors sold 206,621.
GM’s cars and trucks were less robust in March as it cut its incentives by $600 to $800 after offering incentives higher than the industry average in January and February.
Ford’s sales were aided by the strong performance of its Fiesta subcompact car and its Fusion midsize sedan.
Ford sold 9,787 Fiestas in March, the most since the car was introduced last June. Fusion sales increased 21%.
“With gasoline prices eclipsing $3.50 a gallon, consumers are placing a high priority on fuel efficiency in every size and kind of vehicle,” Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of U.S. marketing and sales said in a statement.
Sales of the company’s Lincoln brand, however, declined 2.2%. The company, which is in the process of trying to revive last remaining luxury brand, sold just 8,501 Lincolns in March.
Also, sales of the Taurus full-size sedan declined 15%.
