Rumor of the day is 11.5 hours for paint, body and stamping instead of 11. Heard from a reliable source. I'm sure that "we are the union" will determine that it's in our best interests for us...

The paper that the union put out said 11hrs till January. We are an aging workforce and my legs feel like spaghetti on 11hr days. Somebody from the union needs to get on here and put a stop to this bullshit. All they are doing is bailing out a bunch of dumb-ass management that don't know how to do their job. If they will let them do it to 3 departments then everybody in the plant should be worried.

Worlds Worst Negotiators. Negotiating should go like this...
Company-"we would like to start going 11.5 in body/paint/stamping" Union-"thats great, we would like for the members we represent to have 6 minutes per hour break time & overtime after 8 hours if we agree to this" Company-"well the contract doesnt read like that, we cant agree to that" Union-"ok, next order of business then"
This is how it probably will go down
Company-"we would like to start going 11.5 in body/paint/stamping" Union-"great! We will notify them Monday of the great news!! But you all do realize if they take lunch on the end you can work them 12 hours right?"
Worlds Worst Negotiators

Would you rather be laid-off again? Suck it up! Get to work! Working 11.5 hours is terrible and hurts the body. In the heat that's coming up I can see our great bargaining committee agreeing to that because they don't have a backbone to stand up to the company. They don't have to work in the heat or stand for long periods. Let them come back on the line for a couple of days and see what the real world looks like-maybe they would be s little more compassionate when changing our contract.

Working five 10 hour days is no picnic either, but it wont last forever. The UAW is in business to make money, not to represent you!

Bullshit the whole purpose of a union is to represent the workforce..They get their money regardless of our hours.I can't wait til the day we drop tag and go back to 5 (8 hour days...That will happen too..

For once metalman is right. The purpose of a union is suppose to be to represent the membership. Our union has long since lost sight of this. Their only goal now is to line their own pockets at our expense. I say bring back the 5x8 schedule. So we can work here to live and not live to work here , like we're doing now. If some of you can't make it on 40 hours, learn to budget or sell your $ 60,000 boat.

But they get more money if you work more hours. I really don't understand you people. We have a product that is in demand, but you only want to build them at a rate that is less than needed. How stupid is that?

I tend to believe, and I'm going out on a limb here, part of the problem might be that a good percentage of the people representing us on the local and national level haven't worked on the line in a long, long time.
If ever.
It's very easy to see that 11.5 hours is okay, if you've been in the office for 18 years.

Exactly right.Get them out to the line.I always thought there should be a term limit on any union position..But it's a popularity contest and also human nature to avoid change so they get voted in every time.As far as working more because we have demand hire some more people and put more jobs on the line with LESS WORK,then you could speed it up..But I think anything over 10 hrs is bullshit.I don't care what happens ,take the chassis cabs to Ohio hell take the Duallies too..

I don't enjoy working 5/10s out front either. But, I'm a traditional single income family with 3+ children and a stay home mom. I don't have a boat, or cable TV, or many of the luxuries that many of you have, and between the lack of raises and large increase in grocery and fuel prices over the last ten years, I cannot afford to get by on straight 40 hour pay check. I get tired of people constantly making such condescending remarks. My Union job now pays so little that I don't make enough to pay federal income tax, and when on sub pay, my income level is low enough to qualify for food stamps.

They are to represent us the workers against Ford the company. You have a lot to learn before you run your mouth. If I didnt know any better I would say you are a company troll.

You can get food stamps while making $1,200 a week ? Wow that program really needs to be reworked. I just hate to see the 40 hour work week get pissed away so the bargaining committee can make their $200,000 a year.

All the times they have represented me (except once), they have failed. I am still waiting for my 4 hours from our last snow day. Hey UAW! Where is my money?

The uaw is a tax exempt non profit. It's actually very illegal for them to make a profit. They are in no way a business in any legal sense.
Food stamps? FOOD STAMPS? Dude, there's no such thing as food stamps anymore, and hell no you can't get EBT either working at ford. Damn. I lost a $4.50 hr job back in the 80s, had a new baby, wife made $5 hr maybe and we couldn't get food stamps( which did exist then).

The union has not changed the ELECTED officials have become complacent in their jobs and need a wake up call. There is a lot of knowledge in that office that gets unused do to comfort zone. The only way to change that is start going to the union meetings and become a backup, then you will see first hand both sides of the story. The majority of new elected officials need to study and become more educated in the contract, I've had more incidents here as of late that I knew more than the committee person and that shouldn't happen. The problem is in the office they don't want to teach each other in fear of losing their spot, a lot of them rode out their elected terms just long enough to get reclassified so they wouldn't have to work the line but go straight to bid jobs when they were voted out our didn't run the next term. I strongly urge everyone to become a backup and try it at least once. Their are a lot of hard working men and women with lots of fight that would be great in union work but choose not to pursue it. If we had the best people in the plant get in those elected positions the bickering would die down because the job would be getting done. It would be like drafting a NBA team and choosing Patrick Sparks over Lebron James.

As for a "poor life choice ". I certainly disagree. It is an old fashioned life choice. It is the way my union family was raised. And I feel that a union job should provide a middle class life style for a single income family with 2-3 children. Our base 60k/ year salary is not what it was 10 years ago.
